Fleckner + Simon UPDATE

F+S illuminated Limburg

Dom LichtfestivalWith great success, the Limburg Light Festival took place on November 29th and 30th, 2019.

Under the title "Limburg lights up", larger areas of the old town were provided with Christmas illuminations. The highlight of the festival was the lighting of the cathedral. Many colorful lights danced across the historic building and turned into rays and colorful motifs. Music and a Christmas audio story complemented the lighting installations.

Additional audio stories awaited visitors at the historic town hall and on the “Plötze”. They told events about historical life in Limburg.

The light festival was made possible by local sponsors. As an attractive employer, F + S GmbH financially supported the festival. As a “thank you” we were able to enjoy the projection of our F + S logo on the beautiful cathedral portal.

At the end of this year, we now wish all our customers and employees a peaceful Christmas season and a successful start to the New Year 2020!

Interview on new ISO standard 21448

Almost 10 years after the publication of the ISO 26262 standard, this year the ISO 21448 "Road Vehicles - Safety of the Intended Functionality" (SOTIF) has been published. It now starts where the ISO 26262 reaches its limits, for example in the development of assistance systems. The effects of the standard on the development of Level 1 and Level 2 systems is explained by Dipl.-Ing. Josef Horstkötter, partner and managing director of F + S Fleckner and Simon Informationstechnik GmbH, in an interview.

Autonomous systems change development processes

Everyone is talking about autonomous driving. Even if there has been a decline in the euphoria (everyone can determine the current phase of the hype cycle for themselves) and it is becoming apparent that level 5 autonomous driving will take much longer than sometimes predicted, it remains an important issue for the future of the automotive industry.

The existing standards are not sufficient for ensuring safety in the development of modern assistance systems. That is why the standard “ISO 21448 Safety of the Intended Functionality (SOTIF)” was published this year. The standard “ISO 21434 Road Vehicles - Cybersecurity Engineering” exists as a Committee Draft (CD) and is expected to be published this year as a Draft International Standard (DIS).

To meet the requirements for vehicles for highly automated driving (level 3) and fully automated driving (level 4), auto manufacturers and suppliers are conducting preliminary work and recommendations. These developments are being verified in pilot projects and can lead to supplements of existing standards and creation of new standards. Examples are the white paper “Safety First in Automated Driving (SaFAD)“ prepared under the auspices of Daimler or the Pegasus project, which is subsidized by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWi).

F+S is intensely following the considerations, projects and efforts toward standardization. ISO 21434, which is currently in the making, provides important input for the development of “Cyber Security add-on for Automotive SPICE“, which is being created with the active involvement of F+S.

We are convinced that this will continue to affect the development processes for systems and software in the automotive sector. We are discussing the developments and tendencies both internally and with our partners, and are establishing the necessary knowledge base. We would like to share this with you by occasionally publishing information about the specific issues under “Added value”.

Employee Certification

The know-how and skills of its employees are the most important assets of F + S GmbH. Therefore, the company attaches great importance to the continuous education of its employees. They are regularly instructed in internal trainings, for example on security in information technology.

External trainings are also on the agenda almost every month. For example, several employees were recently instructed to become a Professional Scrum Master or Product Owner. Other employees have received their safety expertise certified by the SGS-TÜV Saar and are now entitled to the title "AFSP - Automotive Functional Safety Professional". One employee has taken the next hurdle to the "AFSE - Automotive Functional Safety Expert".

Developers of the F + S GmbH attended courses with and without certification to the topics Requirements Engineering, Software Architecture, Software Test, but also to Artificial Intelligence. Our consultants were represented at various congresses, in particular on the topics IT Security, Automotive SPICE and Functional Safety, sometimes with their own lectures.

We are happy to consolidate and expand the know-how of F + S GmbH.

On tracks of the dutch royal house

As always, F + S GmbH invited employees, retirees and shareholders with their partners and children to this year's summer party.

In good weather the guests set out on foot along the Lahn to the castle Oranienstein in Diez. Already on the way you could switch off from work on views of the beautiful river Lahn.

At the castle, the guests were awaited by an expert staff member of the castle administration, who opened the rooms of the magnificent baroque palace complex and guided them through the blue and gold hall, marshal's room, garden cabinet and castle chapel. At the Museum Nassau-Oranien, guests also learned all sorts of details and anecdotes from the life of the princes of Nassau-Diez, the ancestors of the Dutch royal family.

After the tour, it was a short walk down to the banks of the river Lahn, where the guests in the restaurant "Das neue Mühlchen" with drinks and a good buffet could recover and relax from the exertion. In casual conversations away from the workday, the attendees let the beautiful summer evening come to an end.
